Novamont North America Sponsored the Connecticut Compost Alliance’s Conference 2026

Novamont North America sponsored the recent Connecticut Compost Conference held at Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT.  There were over 260 registrants for the event, including an enthusiastic community of composters of all scales and sizes for a full day of learning, connection and inspiration.

Novamont NA featured a table display focusing on Mater-Bi bioplastics, which are used in the USA for the manufacture of compostable bags for the collection of food scraps and for soil biodegradable agricultural mulch films.

Novamont North America's Vice President of Marketing, Paul Darby, gave a presentation on the main stage to inform of a recent survey of 500 California residents on their use of compostable produce bags and food scrap collection habits.

A key message was that since most U.S. households use conventional plastic bags and/or plastic kitchen can liners to collect their general waste, if asking households to start separating their food waste, they want a similar convenient bag system to do so.

Compostable bags are designed to perform in very similar ways to a plastic trash bag, including preventing messy leaks from food waste and for hygiene and odor control.   The major difference is that a compostable bag produced with Mater-Bi is designed to biodegrade under composting conditions and not form any persistent microplastics if leaked into the environment.

Overall, it was a productive day where we were able to meet with composters, as well as the Connecticut municipalities waste management and education sector, all of us with a common aim to increase the diversion of organic materials from the waste stream to boost soil health.
